In 2023, while I was strolling through the busy Dotonbori area in Osaka, I happened to turn into a side alley and discovered Hozenji Temple. It was an amazing contrast—just a few steps away from the bright lights and loud crowds of the shopping district, I found a place of complete stillness.
📍 1. Entering a Different World from Ebisubashi-suji
My walk started at the famous Ebisubashi-suji shopping street, one of the most energetic spots in Osaka.
The street was filled with people and music, but as soon as I entered the narrow path leading to Hozenji Yokocho, the city noise began to fade. The stone-paved ground and the traditional architecture make it feel like you’ve stepped back in time to an older version of Osaka.📍 2. The Warm Glow of Traditional Lanterns
As I approached the temple grounds, the first thing I noticed were the numerous lanterns hanging under the eaves.
Even during the day, the lanterns were lit, casting a warm and gentle light over the area. Seeing the names and symbols on each lantern made me realize how much this temple is loved and protected by the local community. It’s a very welcoming sight for any traveler looking for a moment of calm.
📍 3. The Moss-Covered Mizukake Fudo-son
Hozenji is most famous for its "Mizukake Fudo" statue, which is completely covered in thick, green moss.
It is a tradition for visitors to splash water over the statue while making a wish. Over the years, the constant watering has caused the moss to grow so thick that the features of the statue are hidden. Watching locals and tourists quietly offering their prayers in the scent of burning incense was a very grounding experience.
📍 4. A Personal Record: Goshuin written at the Temple Office
Before leaving, I visited the temple office (Shamusho) to collect a Goshuin as a memory of my visit.
I handed my Goshuin book to the staff at the office, and they hand-wrote the calligraphy for "Amida Nyorai" right in front of me. There is something special about the texture of the ink and the rhythm of the brushstrokes. This piece of paper now serves as a beautiful reminder of the peace and the cool air I felt that day in the heart of Namba.
📍 Temple Information & Address

💡 Ryobiyori’s Travel Notes:
If you are tired from shopping or eating around Dotonbori, Hozenji is the perfect place to catch your breath. I highly recommend visiting in the evening when the lanterns look even more beautiful and the surrounding alleys start to come alive with small diners. Also, there is a famous sweet shop nearby called "Meoto Zenzai" if you want to try some traditional red bean soup after your prayer.
