【Kyoto · Sightseeing】Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine: A peaceful sanctuary hidden at the end of the bustling Nishiki Market

In March 2023, while I was exploring the vibrant streets of Kyoto, I visited Nishiki Market, often called "Kyoto's Kitchen." As you walk through the lively market and reach the very end of the arcade, you are greeted by a surprising sight: Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine. It is a unique place where the city's modern hustle and bustle meet traditional spiritual life. Getting there is quite easy by bus, and it is the perfect spot to find a moment of peace after a long morning of shopping.

📍 1. Traveling Like a Local: Taking the Kyoto City Bus

To get around Kyoto, I usually prefer taking the city bus. It is a convenient way to see the city's scenery while moving between attractions.

On this trip, I took the bus and hopped off near the Shijo-Kawaramachi area. The short walk from the bus stop to the market entrance is filled with the sights and sounds of daily Kyoto life, which always adds a nice touch to the journey.

📍 2. Through the Colors of Nishiki Market

Before entering the shrine, you pass through the famous Nishiki Market arcade.

The market was quite crowded in March, filled with tourists and locals alike. The iconic red, yellow, and green glass ceiling creates a very colorful atmosphere. Following the aroma of fresh street food and the energy of the crowd, I walked straight to the end of the street, where the shrine suddenly appears.

📍 3. The Glow of Lanterns at the Gateway

The most striking feature as you approach the shrine is the large number of lanterns hanging at the entrance.

Even during the daytime, these lanterns give off a soft, warm glow that makes the shrine look very welcoming. This shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of scholarship. It is amazing how the peaceful atmosphere of the shrine coexists so closely with the noisy commercial district just steps away.

📍 4. Finding Stillness and the "Rubbing Cow"

As soon as you step past the entrance, the noise of the market fades away, replaced by a sense of calm.

Inside the grounds, you will find the "Nade-ushi" (rubbing cow) statue. It is believed that rubbing the part of the cow's body that corresponds to your own ailment will help you heal. After years of being touched by visitors, the bronze statue is polished and shiny. Taking a few minutes to offer a prayer and enjoy the quiet air was a great way to recharge my energy.

📍 Shrine Information & Address
Name: Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine (錦天満宮)
Address: 537 Nakano-cho, Shinkyogoku-dori Shijo-agaru, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto
Access: About a 5-minute walk from the "Shijo-Kawaramachi" bus stop.

💡 Ryobiyori’s Travel Notes:
Nishiki Tenmangu is also famous for a unique architectural quirk—the top ends of the stone Torii gate actually pierce into the walls of the buildings on both sides! Be sure to look closely at the gate when you enter. Also, if you visit in the evening, the lanterns look even more magical against the night sky. It is a great place to stop by for a quick prayer while you are in the downtown area.
