[Osaka · Gourmet] Tsurumaru Udon Minamimorimachi: A taste of daily life with affordable and delicious stand-up udon

In 2023, while I was exploring the streets of Osaka around lunch time, I came across Tsurumaru Udon in the Minamimorimachi area. It is a place where locals go for a quick, cheap, and satisfying meal. If you want to experience the authentic pace of a Japanese business district, this is a great spot to stop by.

📍 1. A Simple and Quick Ordering Process

The shop follows a self-service style. As soon as you enter, you’ll be greeted by the energetic staff and the savory aroma of dashi broth.

First, you choose your base udon from the menu. I went with a classic bowl topped with a soft-boiled egg. After that, you move along the counter to pick your favorite tempura sides. The prices are incredibly reasonable, making it easy to put together a full meal for a very low price.

📍 2. Local Favorites: Red Ginger and Chicken Tempura

When in Osaka, you have to try the Red Ginger Tempura (Beni Shoga Ten).

The bright pink ginger tempura adds a refreshing tanginess that cuts through the richness of the broth. I also picked up a piece of chicken tempura, which was surprisingly juicy and well-seasoned. The batter was light and provided a nice crunch to accompany the soft noodles.

📍 3. The "Stand-Up" Experience and the Perfect Broth

One of the most interesting parts of this shop is that it is a "Tachigui" (stand-up eating) style restaurant.

There are no chairs, which encourages you to eat quickly and move on—a common sight in Japan's busy cities. The udon noodles are thick and chewy, and the clear dashi broth has a gentle, comforting taste that I wanted to finish until the last drop. I added plenty of green onions and crunchy tempura bits (tenkasu) to make it even more flavorful.

📍 4. A Satisfying Bite to Remember

Diaping the tempura into the hot soup changes the texture and makes it even more delicious as it soaks up the broth.

Even though I don't remember the exact name of the specific udon combo I ordered, I can still remember that first bite of the red ginger tempura—it was sharp, spicy, and exactly what I needed to recharge my energy for the rest of the day.
