[EN] 【Kyoto · Sightseeing】Kiyomizu-dera Temple: A magical sunset visit to the wooden stage with a view of Kyoto Tower

In March 2023, I visited Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto. I intentionally chose to go in the late afternoon to avoid the midday crowds. It turned out to be a great decision. Watching the entire temple complex turn golden as the sun began to set was a truly peaceful and special experience. Honestly, the atmosphere during the "golden hour" is much more relaxed than during the busy daytime.

📍 1. The Walk Up and the Bright Vermilion Gates

The slope leading to Kiyomizu-dera is always lively, but the mood changes as you spot the entrance sign.

As you enter the grounds, the bright vermilion color of the buildings immediately catches your eye. In early March, the contrast between the red architecture and the clear blue sky was beautiful. The bare branches added a quiet, wintry touch to the scenery.

📍 2. The Iconic Wooden Stage: A Masterpiece of Craftsmanship

Walking onto the famous "Kiyomizu Stage" is always a highlight. Even with many visitors around, the view from here remains breathtakingly calm.

I took a moment to look at the wooden pillars supporting the stage. It is fascinating to think that this massive structure was built without using a single nail. Seeing the wood glow in the afternoon sun really makes you appreciate the ancient craftsmanship that has survived for centuries.

📍 3. Kyoto City Skyline and Kyoto Tower at Sunset

The most impressive part of this sunset visit was looking west toward the city center.

As the sun dipped lower, the entire city was covered in a soft orange glow. You could clearly see Kyoto Tower in the distance. The mix of the historic temple in the foreground and the modern tower on the horizon is a scene that truly represents Kyoto.

📍 4. Otowa Waterfall and the Commemorative Goshuin

Before leaving, I walked down to the Otowa Waterfall. People were quietly waiting in line to drink from the three streams, each said to have different benefits.

I also received a Goshuin (temple seal) to commemorate my visit. Looking at the date—March 3rd, 2023—always brings back memories of the cool afternoon breeze and the beautiful light on the stage.

On my way out, I noticed a public phone booth with a traditional tiled roof. It’s small details like this that show how much Kyoto cares about its cultural atmosphere.

💡 Ryobiyori’s Travel Notes:

While early morning is great for avoiding crowds, I highly recommend visiting in the late afternoon for the sunset. The colors on the stage change every few minutes as the sun goes down. Keep in mind that March evenings can still be quite chilly, so bring a light jacket or scarf to stay comfortable while enjoying the view.
