[EN] [Kyoto · Sightseeing] Sugadaijin Shrine: A peaceful hidden gem in Shijo with beautiful plum blossoms and historical vibes

During my trip to Kyoto in March 2023, I stumbled upon a quiet sanctuary called Sugadaijin Shrine while exploring the Shijo area. Unlike the crowded famous temples, this shrine sits quietly within a residential neighborhood. It offers a unique sense of tranquility that makes you feel like you have stepped into the daily life of Kyoto locals. To be honest, it was one of the most relaxing moments of my entire trip.

📍 1. A Hidden Oasis in a Quiet Neighborhood

Sugadaijin Shrine is located on the site of the former residence of Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of scholarship. As soon as you turn off the main street and enter the residential alley, the noise of the city disappears.

The atmosphere here is incredibly calm. While I was there, I saw locals stopping by for a quick prayer on their way home. It feels more like a community space than a tourist spot, which gives it a very warm and authentic vibe.

📍 2. Historical Roots and Spring Plum Blossoms

Since this shrine is dedicated to the God of Learning, it holds significant historical value. There is an ancient well on the grounds and several plum trees associated with the famous legend of the "Flying Plum Tree."

Visiting in early March was perfect because the plum blossoms were just beginning to bloom. The faint scent of the flowers in the crisp morning air was truly refreshing. The wooden architecture of the shrine is modest yet beautiful, showing the passage of time in a very honest and graceful way.

📍 3. The Perfect Location for Your Kyoto Stay

One of the best things about this shrine is its location. It’s tucked away, yet only a few minutes' walk from the bustling Karasuma and Shijo areas.

Actually, I stayed at a hotel called "Wayfarer Shijo" right across the street from this shrine. Being able to wake up and take a peaceful morning stroll through these grounds was a highlight of my stay. It’s rare to find such a quiet spot so close to the city center.

💡 Ryobiyori’s Travel Notes: 粗體/字體中

If you are looking to escape the crowds in Kyoto, I highly recommend visiting this shrine, especially in the early morning. The contrast between the historic buildings and the blue sky is perfect for photography. If you visit in March, don't forget to look for the plum blossoms! It’s not a flashy place, but it’s a spot where you can truly feel the "real" Kyoto.
