[EN] Taichung Food | Nanyang Stinky Tofu: The Most Incredible Crunch in Fengyuan! A Local Favorite for Traditional Taiwanese Snacks|Ryobiyori

When exploring Fengyuan, most people head straight into the Miaodong Night Market. However, if you walk just a few minutes away to Fuqian Street, you’ll find a spot where the locals gather for a truly authentic taste: Nanyang Stinky Tofu (南陽臭豆腐).

This isn't a fancy restaurant. It’s a classic Taiwanese "Xiao-chi" (small eats) shop with red signs and simple tables, serving up comfort food that has stood the test of time.

📍 1. The Star of the Show: Extra Crispy Stinky Tofu

As the name suggests, the stinky tofu is a must-order.

The texture here is what makes it stand out. The outside is fried to an incredible, loud "crunch," while the inside remains airy and moist.

  • How to eat like a local: Poke a hole in the center of the tofu, pour in some of their signature sauce, and stuff it with the pickled cabbage. The sweet and sour cabbage perfectly balances the richness of the fried tofu. It’s addictive!

📍 2. Comfort in a Bowl: Sesame Paste Noodles

If you need something more filling, their noodles are a solid choice.

The Sesame Paste Noodles (Ma-jiang Mian) are served with a generous amount of thick, aromatic sauce. Once you mix it, the scent of toasted sesame fills the air. They use flat white noodles which have a great texture and soak up the creamy sauce perfectly.

📍 3. The Soul of Taiwanese Side Dishes: Pork Intestine & Dried Tofu

A Taiwanese meal isn't complete without "Hei-bai-qie" (assorted small plates).

I ordered the Pork Small Intestine (Fen-chang) and Dried Tofu (Dou-gan). The intestines are cleaned very well and have a satisfyingly chewy, bouncy texture. The dried tofu is sliced thin and drizzled with a savory-sweet soy paste—a simple but essential pairing for the noodles.

📍 4. A Warm Finish: Mixed Soup

To wash it all down, a bowl of clear, hot soup is the traditional way to end the meal.

The Mixed Soup (Zong-he Tang) is light and naturally sweet from the bone broth. The ingredients are plentiful—the pork blood cubes are silky smooth, with no unpleasant aftertaste. It makes the whole meal feel complete and satisfying.

💡 Ryobiyori’s Dining Notes

Nanyang Stinky Tofu offers a "neighborly" vibe that makes you feel relaxed.

  • Verdict: The prices are incredibly low. You can order a full table of food for two people without breaking the bank. It’s the perfect place for a genuine, local Taiwanese dinner.
