[EN] Nagano Travel | Kamisuwa Station Footbath: A Free Hot Spring on a Train Platform! Plus, How to Make Your Own Onsen Eggs|Ryobiyori

Nagano in late February is breathtakingly beautiful but undeniably freezing. While traveling through Suwa City, I stumbled upon one of the most unique "layover" experiences in Japan: a natural hot spring footbath located right inside JR Kamisuwa Station.

📍 1. A Rare Sight: Soaking Your Feet on Platform 1

In Japan, hot springs (Onsen) are everywhere, but finding one on a train platform is truly special. Located on Platform 1 of Kamisuwa Station, this footbath (Ashiyu) uses real thermal water from the Suwa area. As long as you have a train ticket or a platform pass, the experience is completely free.

There is something incredibly "Zen" about watching the E353 "Azusa" express trains glide into the station while your feet are submerged in toasty, mineral-rich water. It is the perfect way to melt away the winter chill.

📍 2. Pro Tip: Bring Your Own Towel!

While the footbath is free, towels are not provided. You can buy them at the station kiosk, but I highly recommend bringing a small one from home.

💡 Ryobiyori’s Note:
Keep a small hand towel in your daypack. Drying your feet properly before putting your socks back on will keep your whole body warm as you continue your journey through the Nagano snow.

📍 3. The Secret Activity: DIY Onsen Eggs for 100 Yen

Beside the footbath, I found a fascinating sign inviting travelers to make their own "Onsen Tamago" (soft-boiled hot spring eggs).

Simply head to the NewDays convenience store on the platform and buy the "Onsen Egg Set" for just 100 Yen. You can then place your eggs in a dedicated boiling pool right at the station. It takes about 20 minutes—just enough time to enjoy the soak while your snack is "cooking"!

📍 4. A Rail Enthusiast's Paradise

If you love train photography, this is a prime spot. You can capture the sleek E353 Series Limited Express trains from a very close (and warm!) perspective.

💡 Ryobiyori’s Travel Summary

  • Location: Platform 1, JR Kamisuwa Station, Nagano Prefecture.

  • Cost: Free (Platform entry fee required if not traveling by train).

  • Verdict: If you find yourself in Suwa during the winter months, this is a must-stop. It’s a warm, cozy, and high-value experience that represents the best of Japanese hospitality.
