[EN] Wayfarer Kyoto Shijo Review: A Minimalist & Tech-Forward Stay in the Quiet Backstreets of Kyoto
Kyoto offers a vast range of accommodations, from centuries-old Machiyas to ultra-modern hotels. For my recent trip, I decided to stay at Wayfarer Kyoto Shijo , a boutique hotel that catches the eye with its minimalist, industrial-inspired design.
It is important to set the right expectations regarding its location. While the name mentions "Shijo," the hotel is not located right next to the subway exit. From Shijo Station (Subway) or Karasuma Station (Hankyu Railway) , it is a steady 8 to 10-minute walk along Shijo-dori. 
I absolutely loved this smartphone-based key design. Not having to carry a physical keycard means one less thing to worry about losing during a busy day of sightseeing. It also solves the common problem of traveling with a partner—you no longer have to coordinate who holds the card or worry about being separated. For anyone who values efficiency and modern tech, this keyless service is a huge plus! 
I was particularly impressed with the bathroom’s water pressure—the hot shower was fantastic. The room also includes essential features like a high-quality hairdryer, an electric kettle, and strategically placed power outlets, which are essential for charging multiple gadgets overnight.
While the hotel is in a residential-feeling area, you are never far from what you need. There is a Lawson convenience store just a short walk away. If you enjoy walking, you can reach the famous Nishiki Market in about 15 minutes. Wandering through the local backstreets between the hotel and the market allows you to see a more authentic, everyday side of Kyoto that most tourists miss.
Unlike traditional hotels with bustling lobbies, Wayfarer offers a more independent and tech-savvy experience. Tucked away in a quiet alley, it’s a great spot for travelers who prefer a peaceful retreat while still being within reach of the city’s heart. In this review, I’ll share my honest experience regarding its location, facilities, and unique keyless system.
Location & Accessibility: A Peaceful Walk from the Main Hub
If you are carrying heavy luggage, this walk might feel a bit long. However, the hotel is located near the intersection of Shijo-dori and Aburanokoji-dori, which is a wonderful area if you want to escape the massive tourist crowds. At night, the neighborhood is incredibly quiet, providing a much better sleeping environment than the hotels located on the noisy main roads.

One of the standout features of Wayfarer Kyoto Shijo is their "Smartphone Digital Lock" system. The entire check-in process is designed to be highly intuitive. After you scan your passport at the lobby kiosk, the system instantly generates a digital code for your room.

The rooms follow a minimalist aesthetic with wood and concrete tones. Like most boutique hotels in Kyoto, the space is compact—just enough to open a medium-to-large suitcase. However, it feels much larger due to the clever furniture layout. The bed was comfortable and provided great support after a long day of exploring the city.
