[En] [Taichung · Food] A Wang Cheng Cafeteria: Authentic Taiwanese Comfort Food in Fengyuan. A Perfect After-Work Local Gathering

After finishing a long day at work, there is nothing more healing than meeting up with friends at a reliable local spot for a warm, home-style meal. In May 2026, we visited the famous "A Wang Cheng Cafeteria" (阿旺澄食堂) in Fengyuan, Taichung. This isn't just a popular dinner choice for locals; it’s a welcoming space where even solo diners can feel the warmth of Taiwanese hospitality.

📍 1. The Signature Dish: Crispy Red Fermented Pork
You simply cannot visit A Wang Cheng without ordering their "Signature Red Fermented Pork." We chose the pork belly cut, which has a wonderful balance of lean meat and fat. The exterior is fried to a golden crisp, while the meat retains the unique sweetness of the red yeast. Served with fresh raw garlic and chili, it is the ultimate "soul food" after a busy day.

📍 2. Flavorful Mains: Sweet Sour Fish and Braised Staples
The "Sweet and Sour Fish" was another highlight—crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, and glazed in a zesty sauce. For carbohydrates, the "Oyster Congee" offered a clean, naturally sweet broth with plump oysters, while the "Braised Pork Rice" (Lu Rou Fan) was a classic done right: rich, savory, and melt-in-your-mouth tender.

📍 3. The Art of Side Dishes
The table was filled with various side dishes, including the "Assorted Braised Platter," silky Chawanmushi (steamed egg), and crispy Fried Tofu. The "Bitter Gourd with Fermented Black Beans" was surprisingly refreshing, with the savory beans balancing the natural bitterness of the gourd. To wash it all down, their signature "Smoked Plum Juice" provided the perfect tart-sweet finish to a heavy meal.

📍 4.The Soul of the Table: Braised Pork Rice and Assorted Platter
For many Taiwanese, a meal is incomplete without these two. The Braised Pork Rice (Lu Rou Fan) was exceptional—the pork was simmered until the fat turned into a rich, savory glaze that coated every grain of rice. To accompany the rice, we had the Assorted Braised Platter (Lu-Wei). The dried tofu and various cuts were deeply infused with a master-stock soy sauce, offering a satisfying salty-sweet balance in every bite.

💡 Ryobiyori’s Foodie Notes
A Wang Cheng Cafeteria isn't a fancy fine-dining restaurant, but it has a relaxing "neighborhood gem" vibe that makes you feel welcome instantly.
Location: Located on Yuanhuan West Road in Fengyuan, about a 5-8 minute drive from Fengyuan Station.
Verdict: The prices are very reasonable, and the Red Fermented Pork and Braised Pork Rice are exceptional. It’s a perfect choice for travelers seeking authentic Taiwanese comfort food in a clean environment.
