【Taichung · Gourmet】Bear House: Hearty dorias and a cozy bear-filled atmosphere near Chungyo Department Store

In June 2026, on a Friday night after work, my friends and I headed to "Bear House" (小熊屋) near the Chungyo Department Store in Taichung for dinner. This place is well-known among locals for its generous portions and affordable prices. If you are looking for a casual spot to enjoy some comforting baked rice or pasta after a busy week, this is a great choice. It was a relaxing evening filled with good food and conversation.

As the name suggests, the interior is filled with teddy bears of all sizes.

The decor has a nostalgic, retro feel that makes you feel right at home. It’s a very welcoming space, whether you are dining with family, a partner, or a group of friends like we were. The warm lighting adds to the relaxed vibe, making it a popular spot in the busy Yizhong shopping district.

The menu offers a wide variety of baked rice (doria), baked pasta (gratin), and spaghetti.

We all opted for the set meals, which include a main dish, corn chowder, garlic toast (4 slices per set), and a drink. It’s an incredible deal for the price.

First, the appetizers were served.

The garlic toast is served warm—crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. My favorite way to eat it is to dip the bread into the rich corn chowder. The portion is quite large, so be careful not to fill up before the main course arrives!

The highlight of the meal was definitely the generous amount of cheese on our main dishes.

I ordered the Hungarian Beef Doria, while my friends chose the Ham & Smoked Chicken Cream Gratin Pasta and the Basil Beef Doria.

The cheese was perfectly melted and stretched endlessly as we took our first bites. The beef and chicken chunks inside were tender, and the sauces were flavorful. For an extra kick, you can add more parmesan cheese powder from the table.

To wrap up our dinner, we enjoyed some cold beverages.

I chose the Matcha Green Milk Tea. It was refreshing and not too sweet, perfect for cleansing the palate after a rich, cheesy meal.
