【Sendai · Gourmet】Rikyu Nishiguchi Honten: Trying the thick-cut "Kiwami" beef tongue set in the heart of Sendai
In February 2025, during my winter trip to Sendai, I knew I couldn't leave without trying the city's most famous dish: beef tongue (Gyutan). I decided to visit "Rikyu Nishiguchi Honten," which is the main branch near Sendai Station. While there are many Rikyu branches across Japan, there’s a special vibe at the original location. I treated myself to the "Kiwami" (premium) set, and it was a very satisfying way to end a cold day in Tohoku.
📍 1. Atmosphere and Kitchen View
I sat at the counter, which is the best seat in the house because you can watch the chefs skillfully grilling each piece of meat over the open flame. The restaurant was lively but comfortable, and seeing all the local sakes in the fridge made the evening feel very relaxing.
I ordered the "Kiwami Beef Tongue Set (4 pieces)
The "Kiwami" cut is much thicker than the standard version. It was perfectly grilled—charred on the outside but still pink and incredibly juicy on the inside. Every bite released a rich, savory flavor that went perfectly with the Mugimeshi (rice mixed with barley). I also added a bit of the spicy "Nanban Miso" on the side to give it an extra kick.
📍 4. Starting the Meal: Appetizers and Drinks
According to my receipt, besides the main set, I had the "Otoshi" (385 JPY), which was a very tender small bowl of simmered beef. I also ordered an "Aragoshi Momo Soda" (660 JPY), a peach-flavored cocktail that was sweet and refreshing. It was a great start before the heavy meal arrived.
