【Kyoto · Gourmet】Tokushima Ramen Todai: Unlimited free raw eggs and a rich savory experience at Kyoto Station

During my visit to Kyoto in March 2023, I was looking for a quick and satisfying meal at Kyoto Station. I ended up at "Kyoto Ramen Koji" on the 10th floor, where I chose "Tokushima Ramen Todai." Tokushima ramen is known for its intense flavor, but what makes this place special is the unlimited free raw eggs on every table. It’s an honest, hearty meal that really hits the spot when you're traveling.

📍 1. Easy Access at Kyoto Station

The restaurant is located in "Kyoto Ramen Koji," which is directly connected to the Kyoto Station Building.

It’s a great spot for travelers because you can escape the station's hustle and bustle for a bit. The interior is lively but comfortable enough for solo diners. Since March in Kyoto can still be a bit chilly, the warm aroma of ramen inside was very welcoming.

📍 2. Rich Tonkotsu Soy Broth and Pork Belly

Unlike typical ramen that uses chashu, Tokushima ramen features thinly sliced, sweet and savory pork belly.

The broth is a rich pork bone soy sauce (Tonkotsu Shoyu). It has a deep flavor but isn't overly greasy. The pork belly slices are tender and soak up the broth perfectly. It’s a simple, honest bowl of noodles that doesn't need fancy decorations to be delicious.

📍 3. The Best Part: Free Raw Eggs and TKG

The signature feature of Todai is the basket of free raw eggs provided at every seat.

Adding a raw egg to the soup makes it much creamier and smoother. There is also a special soy sauce specifically for "Tamago Kake Gohan" (TKG - raw egg over rice). If you're hungry, I definitely recommend ordering a side of rice to enjoy this classic Japanese comfort food alongside your ramen.

📍 4. The Ultimate Filling Meal: Ramen with Rice

The combination of the savory soup, pork belly, and rice is what makes this experience complete.

Mixing the leftover soup with rice and a raw egg is probably the most satisfying way to end the meal. It’s a great way to fuel up for another day of sightseeing without breaking the bank.

📍 5. Crispy Side Dish: Bite-sized Gyoza

I also ordered a side of gyoza to go with my ramen.

The gyoza are bite-sized and perfectly pan-fried until crispy. The filling is juicy and seasoned well, making it a nice contrast to the rich flavors of the Tokushima ramen.

💡 Ryobiyori’s Travel Notes:

If you find yourself at Kyoto Station and can't decide what to eat, Todai is a safe and satisfying choice. The free eggs add so much value, and the "ramen with rice" style is a must-try. It can get busy during peak lunch hours in March, but the line usually moves pretty fast.
