[EN] Nagoya | Osu Kannon Temple Guide: Pigeons, History and Shopping

If you're visiting Nagoya and looking for a place that perfectly captures the local spirit and historic charm, Osu Kannon Temple (大須観音) is a must-visit. It is not just a place of worship but a paradise for street photography lovers.

📍 1. The Magnificent Red Temple

Known officially as "Kitanosan Shinfuku-ji Hosho-in," the temple is famous for its vibrant red architecture.

Standing under the massive red lantern of the main hall (Hondo) is an awe-inspiring experience. The contrast between the bright red structures and the Nagoya sky makes every angle look professional.

📍 2. The 50-Yen Pigeon Feeding Experience

One of the most unique and fun things to do here is feeding the pigeons.

For just 50 Yen, you can buy a small dish of bird seed. As soon as you open your hand, you'll be surrounded by hundreds of friendly pigeons. It’s a bit overwhelming at first but makes for incredible photos and a very therapeutic experience!

📍 3. Collect Memories: Goshuin & Charms

For those who enjoy Japanese temple culture, don't forget to get a "Goshuin" (temple seal).

Watching the monks write the calligraphy live is mesmerizing. I also picked up a "Shinkyo-mamori" (Heart Sutra Charm) in bright red, which is a beautiful keepsake of this trip.

📍 4. Explore Nearby: Osu Shopping District

Right next to the temple is the famous Osu Shopping District, a lively area where tradition meets modern pop culture.

Don't miss the giant Nio-mon Gate wall art—it’s a fantastic spot for a quick photo before you head off to try some local street food or shop for vintage clothes.
